For the Fun Theme Photo Meme in May 2020, the prompt was Springtime.
The theme for #WickedWednesday in April 2021, the prompt is Spring – so I hope you’ll forgive this blast from the past! I tried layering an image of beautiful bluebells over a leggy one of me in fishnets and ankle boots.
I have been out on my usual walks with the dogs, listening to Audible or sharing the dog’s company with my youngest. Much more frequently than last year, when our 4-legged friend was on crate rest after an operation. I love to witness the tight buds on trees and bushes as they unfurl – looking so soft and green, clearly well nourished by sap. As summer progresses and the leaves get wider they lose their ‘tender’ appearance, working hard to photosynthesise they also provide more shade.
I’ve noticed the earliest flowers of the year are predominantly white or yellow, but as spring starts to take hold the majority of the ground flowers are in shades of blue – such as bluebells, forget-me-nots and speedwell. I live near several wooded areas and it uplifts my spirits when I see the bluebells painting the woodland floor blue. The blossom on the trees has been particularly charming this year, it hasn’t been too windy, which of course blows it off.
Fun fact : The sticky sap which leaks out of the stem of a bluebell if picked (wild bluebells should be left for others to admire them) was once used by ‘fletchers’ to glue flights (trimmed feathers) to arrows used in archery and to glue pages into books. The crushed bulbs of wild bluebells produce a starchy substance which, in Elizabethan times, was used to stiffen the ruffs of collars and sleeves.
Not a sexy post, but I’m sure you’ll find a great variety if you visit the posts linked to the #WickedWednesday meme.
