Give It Away is one of my favourite songs by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They’ve made some rock classics over the last 2 decades. I enjoy the ballad Under the Bridge, but it’s lyrics seem to speak of loneliness or regret which is too heart-aching. Mr Churchgate sites his favourite track as Aeroplane.

Give It Away, however, has a really positive message, it is based on the idea that the more you give, the more you receive, so why not give it all away? The concept is quite karmic, like what goes around comes around, or paying it forward. The message is that people cause themselves distress by keeping their more to receive their less.

The song is full of bounce and what seems to be sexual energy. When Anthony Kiedes sings:

“What I’ve got you’ve got to get it put it in you”

It sounds as if he is offering some hot sexy action. The video is full of energy too, the group wear metallic paint while performing frenetic dance moves in the heat and desolation of the desert. They conveyed their message and portrayed the essence of their live performance style in an iconic music video. The speedy refrain is a challenge for karaoke or singing in the shower.

What I’ve got you’ve got to give it to your mama
What I’ve got you’ve got to give it to your pappa
What I’ve got you’ve got to give it to your daughter
You do a little dance and then you drink a little water

What I’ve got you’ve got to get it put it in you
What I’ve got you’ve got to get it put it in you
What I’ve got you’ve got to get it put it in you
Reeling with the feeling don’t stop continue

Realize I don’t want to be a miser
Confide with sly you’ll be the wiser
Young blood is the lovin’ upriser
How come everybody want to keep it like the kaiser

Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now

I can’t tell if I’m a kingpin or a pauper
Greedy little people in a sea of distress
Keep your more to receive your less
Unimpressed by material excess
Love is free love me say hell yes

I’m a low brow but I rock a little know how
No time for the piggies or the hoosegow
Get smart get down with the pow wow
Never been a better time than right now

Bob Marley poet and a prophet
Bob Marley taught me how to off it
Bob Marley walkin’ like he talk it
Goodness me can’t you see I’m gonna cough it

Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now

Lucky me swimmin’ in my ability
Dancin’ down on life with agility
Come and drink it up from my fertility
Blessed with a bucket of lucky mobility

My mom I love her ’cause she love me
Long gone are the times when she scrub me
Feelin’ good my brother gonna hug me
Drink my juice young love chug-a-lug me

There’s a river born to be a giver
Keep you warm won’t let you shiver
His heart is never gonna wither
Come on everybody time to deliver

Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now

What I’ve got you’ve got to give it to your mama
What I’ve got you’ve got to give it to your pappa
What I’ve got you’ve got to give it to your daughter
You do a little dance and then you drink a little water

I agree that Under The Bridge is a depressing song. I never thought much about Give It Away (except the ‘offering hot sexy action’ bit), but I like your take on it. I think a lot of their best songs are on the Californication album.

Thank you for commenting Mrs Fever. I got more aware of the lyrics when they did Carpool Karaoke, then of course researching for your lovely ‘project’ and it’s definitely an ethos I can get on board with.
